Betting Deposits and Withdrawals in Nigeria

Bank transfer, USSD, cards and OPay/PalmPay are the main ways to fund a betting account in Nigeria. For foreign residents, a BVN and NIN decide whether withdrawals go through.

In Nigeria, betting accounts with licensed operators are usually funded by bank transfer (often to a dedicated virtual account), USSD, local debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Verve) and mobile wallets such as OPay and PalmPay. Most of these run through payment gateways like Flutterwave, Paystack and Monnify. Withdrawals normally go only to a verified bank account or wallet in your own name, so for a foreign resident, getting your BVN and NIN sorted is what matters most.

This page takes the questions Chinese residents ask most often in order: deposits, withdrawals, identity checks, tax and crypto. A comparison table follows. Operators change their limits and processing times often, so any figure here without a source should be checked against the operator’s or payment provider’s latest notice.

Tier 1 ₦50,000 ₦300,000

Key points

  • Deposit channels: bank transfer or virtual account, USSD, cards, OPay, PalmPay, Moniepoint/Monnify, Paystack and Flutterwave. Each operator’s cashier shows which ones it accepts.
  • Technext reported in July 2025 that Bet9ja credits Flutterwave card deposits immediately. There is no standard withdrawal time; each operator sets its own.
  • The CBN’s tiered KYC limits, published in 2017, are: Tier 1 ₦50k a day with a ₦300k maximum balance; Tier 2 ₦200k a day and ₦500k; Tier 3 ₦5m a day with no balance cap. Your app shows the limits that apply to you in 2026.
  • Foreigners legally resident for 2 years or more must register for a NIN. You need your passport, residence permit (CERPAC) and BVN. Every Nigerian bank account needs a BVN.
  • Withholding tax on winnings is 5% for residents and 15% for non-residents (WHT Regulations 2024). Since February 2026, Lagos operators deduct 5% at payout and ask for your NIN.
  • No state gaming regulator explicitly allows crypto deposits. Lagos has named offshore crypto sites such as Stake.com as illegal.

The main deposit methods

Bank transfer and virtual accounts

This is the most common method and allows the largest single payments. Many operators give each player a personal “virtual account number”. Send money to it from your banking app and the balance appears automatically. According to Technext, Bet9ja handles its bank-transfer and USSD deposits through Monnify, part of the Moniepoint group. Before you confirm a transfer, check that the beneficiary name matches the operator or its payment partner, and never send money to a personal account.

USSD

USSD lets you send a transfer by dialling your bank’s short code (*XXX#) without mobile data, which helps when your connection is poor. Every bank’s menu is different, and the per-transaction limits are usually lower than in banking apps. Check your bank’s own limits.

Cards (Visa, Mastercard, Verve)

Nigerian debit cards generally work in Flutterwave or Paystack checkouts. Whether an operator accepts a Chinese or international card, and whether the issuing bank declines it, varies. We advise against using Chinese bank cards, Alipay or WeChat Pay to fund foreign betting accounts; see the note for Chinese citizens below.

Mobile wallets: OPay, PalmPay, Moniepoint

OPay and PalmPay are Nigeria’s two best-known wallets, and both have Chinese backing. OPay was founded in 2018 by Opera, then owned by Shenzhen-listed Kunlun Tech. PalmPay’s parent, Transsnet, is a joint venture of Transsion and NetEase and raised $40m in 2019. Moniepoint was founded in 2015 as TeamApt, and the CBN upgraded its microfinance bank to a national licence by January 2026. Wallets are quick and easy to use, but how much you can move depends on your KYC tier. Our step-by-step OPay and PalmPay funding guide covers the details, and the mobile money guide for Nigeria explains opening and using a wallet.

Paystack and Flutterwave

These are payment gateways, not wallets you open. Many of the card, transfer and USSD options in an operator’s cashier are processed by one of them. Stripe bought Paystack in 2020 for about $200m. A 2026 NAN report names Flutterwave, Paystack, OPay and PalmPay as the services Nigerian bettors use most for deposits and withdrawals.

Method Deposits Withdrawals What a foreigner needs Watch out for
Bank transfer / virtual account Yes, high limits Most common destination Local bank account + BVN Check the beneficiary name
USSD Yes Rarely used Local bank account Lower per-transaction limits
Local debit card Yes, via gateway Depends on operator Local bank account OTP confirmation
OPay Yes Depends on operator BVN/NIN set your tier Daily wallet limit
PalmPay Yes (some operators) Depends on operator Verification before use Daily wallet limit
Moniepoint / Monnify Yes (virtual account) Depends on operator Local account Check the cashier

Deposit and withdrawal times

Deposits usually arrive within seconds or minutes, and Technext reports that Bet9ja credits Flutterwave deposits immediately. Withdrawal times are set by each operator. They depend on whether your KYC is complete, whether a first withdrawal is reviewed manually, whether the receiving account name matches your betting account, and on bank or NIBSS load. We found no reliable source for operators’ standard payout times, so we don’t quote hours here. Read the operator’s withdrawal terms before you sign up, and test with a small amount first.

KYC: do foreigners need a NIN and BVN?

Yes, and checks are getting stricter. In 2022 the House of Representatives resolved that operators should collect a NIN before taking bets, and Lagos’s withholding-tax rules from February 2026 require a NIN at payout. For foreign residents:

  • BVN: required for every bank account holder. Foreigners must be legally resident and hold a residence permit.
  • NIN: under section 16 of the NIMC Act, foreigners legally resident for 2 years or more must register, using a passport, residence permit (CERPAC) and BVN. Short-stay visitors are not required to register.
  • A CBN circular of December 2023 required all Tier 1–3 accounts to be linked to a BVN or NIN or be frozen. OPay and PalmPay now verify users before allowing transactions.

If your residence papers aren’t done yet, start with our STR and CERPAC guide. Without a BVN and NIN you will usually be stuck on a low tier, and withdrawals may stall at KYC.

Tax on winnings

Under the WHT Regulations 2024, lottery and gaming winnings paid to individuals carry withholding tax of 5% for residents and 15% for non-residents (KPMG, May 2026). Since February 2026, Lagos-licensed operators deduct 5% before payout and pay it to the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service. Whether you are charged 5% or 15% depends on how the operator classifies your tax residence. Our guide to the Nigeria Tax Act 2026 covers the wider reform, and the naira exchange guide explains currency swings.

Crypto rules

In December 2023 the CBN issued guidelines that let banks hold accounts for SEC-registered virtual asset service providers, replacing the 2021 ban. The Investments and Securities Act 2025 treats digital assets as securities. Even so, we found no state gaming framework that explicitly allows crypto deposits for betting, and the shelved Central Gaming Bill would have restricted them. Lagos has listed Stake.com as illegal and says it will pursue the payment firms and advertisers that serve it. If you bet with crypto on an offshore site, you have no local regulator to complain to.

A note for Chinese citizens

  • Article 303(3) of China’s Criminal Law makes it an offence to organise PRC citizens to gamble abroad. Don’t top up or collect money on behalf of others, and don’t promote betting sites.
  • In November 2024, police raided premises in Jahi, Abuja, and charged 109 foreigners, Chinese nationals among them, with offences including running “unregistered gambling platforms”. These are allegations only. Stay away from any role in running, collecting payments for, or moving money through betting platforms.
  • Pay only licensed operators, and only from local accounts in your own name. Our overview of Nigerian gambling law has the legal background.

FAQ

Can foreigners use OPay or PalmPay to fund a betting account?

Yes, once the wallet is verified. Since December 2023, wallets must be linked to a BVN or NIN. Foreigners usually get a BVN by opening a local bank account first, and the KYC tier sets the limits.

Are betting winnings taxed in Nigeria?

Yes. Under the WHT Regulations 2024, withholding tax is 5% for residents and 15% for non-residents. Since February 2026, Lagos operators deduct 5% at payout.

How long do withdrawals take?

Each operator sets its own times; there is no standard. Incomplete KYC, a name mismatch or a manual review of a first withdrawal can all cause delays.

Can I bet with crypto in Nigeria?

We found no state gaming framework that allows crypto deposits. Offshore crypto sites such as Stake.com are on Lagos's illegal list.

Can I use a Chinese bank card or Alipay?

We advise against it. Fund licensed operators only from Nigerian accounts in your own name, to avoid problems under Chinese law and with your bank's risk controls.
