Lagos is Nigeria’s largest city and commercial capital, and the place where most Chinese residents live and work. China’s Consulate-General is on Victoria Island, Lagos China Town sits in Ojota, and the Chinese-backed Lekki Free Trade Zone and Lekki Deep Sea Port are on the Lekki peninsula. If you are new, sort out three things first: live close to work, learn the traffic patterns, and save the consulate’s helpline and the Lagos emergency numbers 767 and 112.

Key points

  • Population: 9.1 million for Lagos State in the 2006 census, 13.5 million in the official 2022 projection; about 17.8 million in the metro area in 2026 (third-party estimate).
  • Chinese community: MOFCOM’s 2025 guide estimates about 100,000 Chinese nationals in Nigeria, mostly in Lagos, Kano and Abuja.
  • Consulate: Plot 161A Idejo Street, Victoria Island, covering 20 southern states.
  • Business hubs: Ojota China Town, Lekki FTZ (134 signed and 66 operating firms as of Oct 2025) and Lekki Deep Sea Port.
  • Safety: the UK FCDO sets no regional advisory level for Lagos but urges care on the mainland, at night and on foot.

The city and its population

Lagos splits into the “Island” (Lagos Island, Ikoyi, Victoria Island and the Lekki corridor) and the “Mainland” (Ikeja, Yaba, Surulere, Ojota and more), linked by a handful of bridges. Rush-hour traffic is heavy, so travel time matters more than distance when you choose where to live. Ikeja is the state capital, and Murtala Muhammed International Airport (LOS) is on the mainland.

Population figures in Nigeria are disputed. National Population Commission data put Lagos State at 9,113,605 in the 2006 census and 13,491,800 in the 2022 projection, while the Lagos State statistics office has published higher numbers. Macrotrends estimates the metro area at about 17.8 million in 2026. On any measure, Lagos is one of West Africa’s biggest cities.

Where Chinese residents live and work

Victoria Island and Ikoyi

The Consulate-General is at Plot 161A Idejo Street, Victoria Island, and covers 20 southern states. VI and Ikoyi host banks, corporate head offices and international hotels. Security and services are better here, and rents are the highest in the city.

The Lekki corridor

The consulate’s economic and commercial office is on Babatunde Anjous Street in Lekki Phase 1. Further east along the peninsula are the Lekki Free Trade Zone and Lekki Deep Sea Port, so staff working on zone or port projects often live along the Lekki corridor to cut commuting time.

Ojota China Town (Mainland)

China Town opened in 2004 beside a main road in Ojota and is easy to spot by its pink walls and red archway. A May 2026 field report describes shops selling mostly Chinese imports, a supermarket with Chinese-labelled goods, a pork butcher, a clinic staffed by Chinese doctors and several dozen apartments. Sunday is the busy day, when Chinese residents from across Lagos come in to shop.

Business and the Chinese presence

Lagos is the main gateway for China–Nigeria trade. According to MOFCOM’s 2025 country guide:

  • Lekki Free Trade Zone: shareholders include CRCC, CCECC, the China-Africa Development Fund and Nanjing Jiangning; 30 km² planned, 3 km from the deep sea port; 134 signed and 66 operating companies as of October 2025.
  • Lekki Deep Sea Port: built by China Harbour Engineering (CHEC), a roughly $1.6bn project in which CHEC holds about 52.5%.
  • Rail: CCECC built the Lagos Blue and Red rail lines.
  • Phones: Transsion’s Tecno, Infinix and itel held 50.69% of Nigeria’s mobile vendor share in February 2025 (Statcounter).

For incentives and entry procedures, read our guide to Nigeria’s free trade zones; if you plan to set up a company, start with how to register a company in Nigeria. The China Commodities Expo runs in Lagos on 3–5 November 2026 with more than 250 Chinese manufacturers expected. In September 2026 some Lagos traders protested against Chinese wholesalers selling direct to retail customers, a reminder that compliance and community relations matter.

Getting there

No direct China–Nigeria flight is confirmed as operating, so most people connect through Addis Ababa (Ethiopian), Dubai (Emirates, which resumed daily Lagos–Dubai flights on 1 October 2024), Doha (Qatar Airways, 10 weekly Doha–Lagos flights in winter 2025/26) or Istanbul. Our China–Nigeria flights guide compares the options. You need an e-Visa, and you must complete the online landing card within 72 hours before arrival.

Safety

The UK FCDO (updated 19 October 2026) sets no regional level for Lagos but says violent crime is common in large cities, advises caution on the mainland, at night and when on foot, and notes that kidnapping is common in larger south-western cities. In practice:

  • Limit night movement, avoid hailing cars on the street, and use company vehicles or a trusted driver.
  • Keep cash, phones and valuables out of sight.
  • Save the Lagos emergency lines 767 and 112, which both reach the Lagos State Command and Control Centre (fire, ambulance, emergency management, Rapid Response Squad).
  • Save the consulate helpline +234 916 279 1792 (lagos@csm.mfa.gov.cn).

For risk regions and practical measures, see our Nigeria security guide.

Leisure

Weekends in Lagos revolve around restaurants, beaches and hotel leisure, and a Sunday shopping run to Ojota China Town is routine for many Chinese families. For adults (18+) who enjoy casinos or sports betting: gambling in Lagos is regulated by the Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority (LSLGA) under a 2021 state law, and both land-based casinos and online operators need a Lagos licence. The Federal Palace Hotel on Victoria Island has a casino. Since February 2026 Lagos withholds 5% tax on betting winnings, and you need a National Identification Number (NIN) at payout. Our Nigeria gambling guide covers what is legal, licensed operators and responsible play.

Cost of living hints

Island rents have risen fast. Lagos Realty’s 2026 Lagos Island report puts average yearly rent for a two-bedroom flat at ₦17.25m in Ikoyi, ₦15m on Victoria Island, ₦10m in Lekki Phase 1 and ₦8.5m in Ikate, more than double 2022 levels. At the official rate of about ₦1,333 per dollar (12 October 2026), an Ikoyi two-bed costs about $13,000 a year. Our Lagos neighbourhoods guide goes area by area. Power, drivers, household staff and school fees vary widely, so get real quotes.

First-week checklist for Lagos

  1. Papers: employees should enter on an STR visa and obtain a residence permit (CERPAC, now applied for online, with an e-CERPAC issued first) within three months. Short business trips use the e-Visa, which cannot be extended; overstays cost $15 a day and can bring a re-entry ban.
  2. Landing card: complete it online within 72 hours before every arrival and every departure.
  3. SIM card: MTN and Airtel are the main networks. Every SIM must be linked to a National Identification Number (NIN); short-stay visitors can register with a passport.
  4. Health: carry your yellow fever certificate (checked on entry and exit), take malaria prophylaxis as your doctor advises, and prevent bites.
  5. Register: give your personal and company details to the Chinese Consulate-General in Lagos and join your employer’s or chamber’s security-alert group.
  6. Money: know the gap between the official and parallel rates (about ₦1,333 vs ₦1,357–1,375 per dollar in October 2026) and change money through banks and licensed operators.

Rules change, so check the Nigeria Immigration Service and the Chinese missions for the latest notices.
