Abuja is Nigeria’s capital, in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). It is home to the Chinese Embassy, most federal ministries and the regional head offices of many Chinese companies. The city is planned, calmer than Lagos and suits people in engineering, telecoms and trade who deal with government, but the outer suburbs are far less safe than the centre, so check route risks before leaving the city.

Key points

  • Population: 1.41 million in the FCT at the 2006 census, about 3.07 million in the official 2022 projection.
  • Embassy: Plot 302-303 Diplomatic Drive, Central Area, covering 16 northern states plus the FCT; helpline +234 806 337 8795.
  • Chinese-built projects: the Abuja light rail (CCECC), outer ring roads and the Greater Abuja Water Supply Project (CGCOC).
  • Safety: the UK FCDO sets no regional level for the city but warns that outer suburbs are prone to violence and advises its staff to stay broadly within the metropolitan area.
  • Leisure: Transcorp Hilton has a casino; gambling in the FCT is licensed by the FCT Lottery Regulatory Office, 18+ only.

The city and its population

Abuja replaced Lagos as capital in 1991 and is laid out in districts. The Central Area holds government buildings and embassies; Maitama, Asokoro, Wuse and Garki are the established diplomatic, office and upmarket residential districts; and satellite towns are growing fast on the edges.

National Population Commission figures put the FCT at 1,406,239 in the 2006 census and 3,067,500 in the 2022 projection, making it one of the fastest-growing parts of the country. There is no reliable recent figure for the city itself, so we do not quote one.

Chinese institutions in Abuja

  • Chinese Embassy: Plot 302-303 Diplomatic Drive, Central Area. It covers the 16 northern states and the FCT (the Lagos consulate covers the 20 southern states). Helpline +234 806 337 8795, abuja@csm.mfa.gov.cn.
  • Chinese Visa Application Service Centre: Murjanatu House, 1 Zambezi Crescent, Maitama, for Nigerians applying to visit China.
  • China General Chamber of Commerce in Nigeria: founded in Abuja in 2011 with 182 member firms, chaired by CCECC since 2023, at Plot 674 Musa Yar’Adua Way. It runs WeChat security-alert groups and hosts Spring Festival and Mid-Autumn events.

Huawei and several engineering firms have offices around Maitama and Wuse. MOFCOM advises newly arrived Chinese companies to register with the embassy’s Economic and Commercial Office.

Business and the Chinese presence

Chinese business in Abuja centres on government contracts, infrastructure and telecoms:

  • Abuja light rail: built by CCECC, first opened in 2018, halted during COVID-19, and relaunched for commercial service in May 2024; the metro-to-airport ride takes about 40 minutes.
  • Roads and water: CGCOC built the Outer Northern and Southern ring expressways and the Greater Abuja Water Supply Project; CHEC is expanding the Abuja–Keffi Expressway.
  • Rail: CCECC built the Abuja–Kaduna line (about 187 km).

Doing business here means dealing with several federal agencies, so read our company registration guide and the expatriate quota explainer first.

Dealing with government offices

Abuja hosts the federal ministries, the Immigration Service headquarters and most approval bodies. STR visa approvals for foreign staff are now centralised at NIS headquarters in Abuja and take about 10 working days, and expatriate quota (EQ) reviews are stricter: an EQ slot is only for a role no Nigerian can fill and needs at least two Nigerian understudies. Having your CAC incorporation papers, NIPC registration and Certificate of Capital Importation ready cuts down on resubmissions. Keep formal dealings in writing through your company or lawyer, and keep every receipt.

Getting there

Abuja’s airport is Nnamdi Azikiwe International (ABV). Ethiopian connects Abuja with Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chengdu via Addis Ababa; Qatar Airways flies Doha–Abuja with onward legs to Kano and Port Harcourt; and Turkish Airlines sells Guangzhou–Abuja via Istanbul. Compare routes in our China–Nigeria flights guide.

Safety

The UK FCDO (updated 19 October 2026) sets no regional level for Abuja but says the outer suburbs are prone to violence, violent crime has spread towards wealthier central areas, and British government staff should stay broadly within the Abuja metropolitan area. Protests can turn violent. The neighbouring states of Niger, Kogi and Kaduna are all on the FCDO’s “all but essential travel” list. In October 2026 a Chinese worker was killed in an attack on a construction site in Kebbi State, so anyone travelling from Abuja to north-western project sites should follow their company’s security plan.

  • National emergency number 112 (including ambulance).
  • Embassy helpline +234 806 337 8795; China’s global consular hotline +86-10-12308.
  • Avoid night travel outside the city, tell your company your route, and vary routines.

Leisure

Leisure in Abuja means hotel restaurants, golf and trips out to Aso Rock and Zuma Rock. For adults (18+) who want a casino night: after the 2024 Supreme Court ruling the FCT set up the FCT Lottery Regulatory Office (FCT-LRO), which licenses sports betting, casinos and other gaming, and Hilton’s own page lists a casino at the Transcorp Hilton. A word of caution: in November 2024 police raided premises in Jahi, Abuja, and 109 foreigners, including Chinese nationals, were charged over allegedly unregistered gambling platforms, immigration breaches and cybercrime. Playing at licensed venues is legal; working for illegal platforms is very high risk. Our Nigeria gambling guide explains the rules.

Cost of living hints

Overall prices are similar to Lagos, and rents in Maitama and Asokoro are high. We found no reliable 2026 district-level rent data for Abuja, so compare several agents’ quotes and rely on the signed contract. For currency, see our naira exchange guide.

First-week checklist for Abuja

  1. Papers: employees should enter on an STR visa and obtain a residence permit (CERPAC, now applied for online, with an e-CERPAC issued first) within three months. Short business trips use the e-Visa, which cannot be extended; overstays cost $15 a day and can bring a re-entry ban.
  2. Landing card: complete it online within 72 hours before every arrival and every departure.
  3. SIM card: MTN and Airtel are the main networks. Every SIM must be linked to a National Identification Number (NIN); short-stay visitors can register with a passport.
  4. Health: carry your yellow fever certificate (checked on entry and exit), take malaria prophylaxis as your doctor advises, and prevent bites.
  5. Register: give your personal and company details to the Chinese Embassy in Abuja and join your employer’s or chamber’s security-alert group.
  6. Money: know the gap between the official and parallel rates (about ₦1,333 vs ₦1,357–1,375 per dollar in October 2026) and change money through banks and licensed operators.

Rules change, so check the Nigeria Immigration Service and the Chinese missions for the latest notices.
