Funding a Betting Account with OPay and PalmPay

Pick OPay or PalmPay at the operator's cashier and approve the payment in the app. Your KYC tier and the operator's limits decide how much you can move.

The safest way to fund a licensed Nigerian betting account with OPay or PalmPay is to choose OPay or PalmPay on the operator’s deposit page and approve the payment in the wallet app, or to transfer to the dedicated account number the operator gives you. It usually takes a few minutes. How much you can move depends on your wallet’s KYC tier and on the operator’s own limits.

Both wallets have Chinese backing and are widely used by Chinese residents in Nigeria. Below we cover who owns them, then walk through deposits, withdrawals, limits and troubleshooting.

5 steps to fund a betting account with OPay

  1. Log in to a licensed operator and open Deposit
  2. Choose OPay as the payment method
  3. Enter the amount in naira and confirm
  4. Approve with your PIN in OPay
  5. Check your balance and keep the reference

  • Since December 2023, both wallets require a BVN or NIN before you can transact.

  • Technext reports that Bet9ja accepts OPay, and that 1xBet, Betano, 22Bet and BetKing list PalmPay.

The advocacy group GambleAware Nigeria alleges that OPay promotes betting inside its app without the right licence. That is one group’s claim, and we mention it for completeness only.

Before you start

  1. Verify your wallet. Foreigners usually get a BVN by opening a Nigerian bank account. If you have been legally resident for 2 years or more, you must also register for a NIN, using your passport, CERPAC and BVN. Our mobile money guide covers opening a wallet.
  2. Upgrade your KYC tier. A higher tier means a higher daily limit. The upgrade requirements are on the account-level or upgrade screen in the app.
  3. Sign up with a licensed operator and complete its KYC. Make sure it holds a licence for your state; in Lagos that is the LSLGA. See how we assess betting operators.
  4. Use the same name everywhere. Your wallet, bank account and betting account must all be in the same name, or withdrawals will stall.

Method 1: choose OPay at the operator’s cashier

  1. Log in to the operator’s website or app and open Deposit.
  2. Pick OPay as the payment method. Some operators label it “OPay Wallet” or route it through Flutterwave.
  3. Enter the amount in naira and confirm.
  4. You are sent to OPay. Enter your registered phone number and PIN to approve.
  5. Back on the operator’s site, the balance should update automatically. If it hasn’t after 10–15 minutes, contact the operator’s support and quote the OPay transaction reference.

Method 2: choose PalmPay at the operator’s cashier

  1. Log in, open Deposit and pick PalmPay (only some operators offer it).
  2. Enter the amount and confirm. You are sent to the PalmPay app or receive a payment request.
  3. Check the payee name and amount in PalmPay, then enter your PIN.
  4. Check your betting balance and screenshot the receipt.

Nairametrics reported in 2024 that the PalmPay app connects to Bet9ja, BetKing, SportyBet and others, so you can fund a betting wallet from inside PalmPay. Which operators appear, and where, depends on the current app.

Method 3: transfer to your dedicated account number

Many operators give each player a virtual account number. In OPay or PalmPay, choose “transfer to bank” and send the money to that number. Before you confirm, check that the beneficiary is the operator or its payment partner (Monnify, for example). Never pay a personal account, and ignore anyone on WhatsApp or WeChat offering to top up your account for you.

Withdrawing to OPay or PalmPay

  1. On the operator’s Withdraw page, choose bank transfer or a supported wallet.
  2. Enter or confirm your OPay or PalmPay account number (usually the 10-digit number linked to your phone). The account name must match your betting account.
  3. Enter the amount and submit. A first withdrawal may be reviewed or need extra KYC.
  4. Check the amount that arrives. Since February 2026, Lagos operators deduct 5% withholding tax on winnings before paying out, and they will ask for your NIN.

Limits by KYC tier

KYC tier Daily limit Maximum balance
Tier 1 ₦50,000 ₦300,000
Tier 2 ₦200,000 ₦500,000
Tier 3 ₦5,000,000 Unlimited

These are the CBN’s mobile-wallet tiers as published in 2017. A May 2026 summary of OPay’s limits by the third-party site brands.ng matches them, but wallets can set lower limits within the CBN ceilings. What you can actually move is the lower of your wallet limit and the operator’s per-transaction limit, so check both in the apps.

Fees

Most operators don’t charge for OPay or PalmPay deposits, but check each operator’s terms. Nigeria charges a ₦50 stamp duty on electronic transfers of ₦10,000 or more, deducted from the sender. Wallet-to-bank transfers may carry a small fee, shown in the app. If an operator or “support agent” asks you to pay an “unlock fee” or “tax” before a withdrawal, it is almost certainly a scam. Licensed operators deduct tax on winnings at payout; you never transfer it separately.

OPay or PalmPay?

Consideration OPay PalmPay
Operator support Accepted in the cashier of major operators such as Bet9ja Listed by 1xBet, Betano, 22Bet and BetKing; some operators can be funded from inside the app
ID BVN or NIN Verification before use; NIN for upgrades
Best for People already using OPay day to day who need higher limits People using BetKing and other PalmPay partners

Having both is fine. Link only your own accounts, and give betting its own lower limit.

Staying safe

  • Never share your OPay or PalmPay PIN, OTP or login code with anyone, including people claiming to be operator support.
  • Don’t move money for others or lend out your wallet. That can amount to money laundering, and under Chinese law it can count as assisting online crime.
  • Download wallet and betting apps only from the official app stores.
  • If you spot a suspicious transaction, freeze the account in the app and contact official support straight away. Our Nigeria security guide has more safety basics.

Troubleshooting

  • Money left your wallet but the betting balance didn’t change. Keep the transaction reference, contact the operator first and the wallet second, and don’t pay again.
  • Withdrawal rejected. Usually a name mismatch or unfinished KYC. Check that the spelling on your passport matches your BVN record.
  • Lower limit after logging in on a new device. Some wallets apply a temporary cap. Third-party reports put OPay’s at ₦20k for the first 24 hours. Wait for it to lift.
  • Keep betting money separate from living and business funds. For exchange rates, see the naira exchange guide.
