18+ Gambling is for adults 18+. Nigerian gambling is regulated state by state and rules and taxes change; Sharia-law states in the north ban it. Please bet responsibly. Responsible gambling

The most popular form of gambling in Nigeria is football betting, followed by crash games such as Aviator, virtual sports and lotto, including Premier Lotto, known on the street as “Baba Ijebu”. Online casinos add baccarat, roulette and slots. Every one of these games has a house edge, so the expected result of playing over time is a loss. The only difference is how fast you lose.

This guide explains how each game works, the maths behind it and the risks, so Chinese residents can make informed choices. It is for adults aged 18+ only and offers no winning systems.

Key points

  • Sports betting is about 75% of Nigeria’s online gambling market (Launch Base Africa, October 2026).
  • A 2025 GeoPoll survey across six African countries found crash games were the second most popular betting product, at 24%. The figure is not specific to Nigeria.
  • House edge: baccarat banker 1.06%, European roulette 2.70%, American roulette 5.26%.
  • Virtual sports and crash games are decided by random number generators. Rounds take minutes or seconds, which makes them the easiest to get hooked on.
  • Premier Lotto (Baba Ijebu) is one of Nigeria’s longest-established lotto operators, with more than 20 games.

The games at a glance

Game What decides the result Round length Main risk
Football betting Real matches About 90 min (in-play faster) Margin in every price; accumulators rarely win
Virtual sports Random number generator A few minutes Fast rounds encourage chasing losses
Crash (Aviator etc.) Random number generator Seconds Very fast; impulsive stakes
Lotto (Baba Ijebu etc.) Draw Per draw Very low odds of winning
Baccarat Cards About 1 min Very high edge on tie
Roulette Wheel About 1 min Double-zero wheel doubles the edge
Slots Random number generator Seconds Fast and volatile

Football betting

Football dominates Nigerian betting, peaking during the Premier League, Champions League and Africa Cup of Nations. Markets include 1X2, Asian handicap, over/under, both teams to score and accumulators. Every price includes the bookmaker’s margin, about 5% on a typical two-way market priced at 1.90 on each side. Accumulators stack that margin leg after leg, so the advertised payouts look great but rarely land. For a full list of markets in English and Chinese, and how to convert odds, see our guide to sports betting in Nigeria.

Virtual sports

Virtual football, virtual horse racing and similar games are computer-generated matches that run every few minutes. They look like real sport, but a random number generator decides the result; “team strength” and “form” are just graphics, so studying them is pointless. We found no reliable data on the virtuals share of the Nigerian market.

Crash games: Aviator

Aviator, made by the developer Spribe, is the best-known crash game in Nigeria. When a round starts, a plane takes off and a multiplier climbs from 1.00x. You must cash out before the plane flies away (the “crash”) to collect your stake times the current multiplier. If you have not cashed out when it crashes, you lose your whole stake. A random number generator sets the crash point.

Media reports put Aviator’s return to player (RTP) at about 97%, a house edge of about 3%. We could not verify this on the developer’s own site, so check the game information on your platform. The real danger is the pace: rounds last seconds, which makes “one more round to win it back” very easy. “Predictor” apps and “signal” groups cannot predict a random result, and most are scams.

Lotto: Premier Lotto (Baba Ijebu)

Premier Lotto was founded and is owned by Sir Kessington Adebutu, popularly called “Baba Ijebu” after his home region. It offers more than 20 lotto games and is one of Nigeria’s longest-established operators.

Lotto has low stakes and big headline prizes, but the odds of winning are very low, and returns are usually worse than casino games. Game rules, draw times and payout multipliers can change, so check the official kiosk notices. We do not list payout figures we could not verify.

Baccarat

Baccarat is the casino game Chinese players know best. With 8 decks:

  • Banker: 1.06% house edge (a 5% commission is usually taken on banker wins)
  • Player: 1.24% house edge
  • Tie: 14.36% house edge

Reading “roads” or following betting patterns does not change the odds of the next hand, because each hand is independent. We found no evidence of baccarat rooms or mahjong products in Nigeria aimed at Chinese players. For land-based venues, see our guide to casinos in Nigeria.

Roulette

European roulette has a single zero, giving a 2.70% house edge on every bet. American roulette has both 0 and 00, giving 5.26% on most bets and 7.89% on the 0-00-1-2-3 five-number bet. If you play, European roulette has the better maths.

Slots

Online slots are driven by a random number generator, and each game’s RTP is set by its developer; reputable platforms publish it in the game rules. A spin takes seconds, results swing wildly, and big jackpots are rare. Check the RTP, but do not treat it as a reason to expect a win: it is a long-run average over millions of spins, and your own session can be far worse.

What the house edge means in practice

The house edge is the share of every 100 staked that the operator expects to keep, on average, over the long run. Suppose you stake ₦100,000 a week in total. On European roulette, your expected loss is about ₦2,700; on baccarat tie bets, it is about ₦14,360. These are averages, and short-term results can differ a lot, but the direction does not change. For budgeting ideas, see betting strategy and bankroll management.

Common scams linked to these games

  • “Predictor” apps and “hacked” versions: they claim to forecast Aviator crash points or virtual results. Random outcomes cannot be predicted, and these apps can steal your account and bank details.
  • “Sure win” groups and “mentors”: they let you win small to build trust, then push you to deposit big or pay a “membership fee”.
  • “Fixed match” tips: paid tips on supposedly fixed games are almost always scams.
  • Private deposit agents: money sent to an individual “agent” is hard to recover. Use only the operator’s official payment channels.

Licensed operators and responsible gambling

Whatever you play, use only operators licensed in your state (the Lagos register is on lslga.org), and avoid sites such as Stake.com that Lagos named illegal in September 2026. For the legal details, see Nigeria gambling laws; for deposits, see gambling payments in Nigeria.

Gambling is for adults aged 18+ only. Set time and money limits, never chase losses and never borrow to play. Lagos players can self-exclude through SafePlay. If you need help, read our responsible gambling and help resources.
