Kano for Chinese Residents: Northern Trade Hub, Sharia Law and Safety

Kano is northern Nigeria's trade hub with a long-established Chinese community. Sharia law applies and gambling is banned.

Kano is northern Nigeria’s largest commercial city, a centuries-old Sahel trading hub, and one of the three cities where MOFCOM says most Chinese residents live (with Lagos and Abuja). It is known for textiles, leather, farm produce and wholesale trade, and Chinese residents here mostly work in trading and manufacturing. Two things to know up front: Kano State applies Sharia law, under which gambling is banned, and the UK FCDO advises against all but essential travel to Kano State.

Key points

  • Population: 9.4 million in Kano State at the 2006 census and about 15.46 million in the 2022 projection, the most populous state.
  • Consular cover: Kano falls under the Chinese Embassy in Abuja; helpline +234 806 337 8795.
  • Trade: Kano Free Trade Zone and Dala Inland Dry Port; in 2025 Kano and the Chinese Embassy agreed to deepen trade, investment and cultural ties.
  • Law: Sharia has applied since 2000, banning gambling and alcohol; the Hisbah has been shutting betting shops since October 2024.
  • Safety: the UK FCDO lists Kano State as “all but essential travel” (October 2026).

The city and its population

Kano is an ancient Hausa city-state, and its old walls, the Emir’s Palace and the Kofar Mata dye pits still stand. Hausa is the everyday language, with English used in business. National Population Commission figures put Kano State at 9,401,288 in 2006 and 15,462,200 in the 2022 projection. The latest official figure for the city itself dates from the 1991 census (about 2.17 million), and recent estimates vary widely.

The Chinese community in Kano

MOFCOM’s 2025 guide estimates about 100,000 Chinese nationals in Nigeria, mainly in Lagos, Kano and Abuja. The Chinese presence in Kano goes back to early textile and trading investment, and ties with the local community run deep: in 2019 the then Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, approved a chieftaincy title for Mike Zhang, a leader of the Chinese community in the north. In March 2025 Ambassador Yu Dunhai visited Kano’s governor; they discussed the “Chinese community in Kano” and cooperation on farm machinery, infrastructure and education, and the governor proposed a Chinese language centre.

There is no reliable public data on which neighbourhoods Chinese residents favour. Newcomers should arrange housing and security through their employer, the China General Chamber of Commerce in Nigeria or community groups.

Business and the Chinese presence

  • Trade cooperation: in February 2025 Kano’s commerce ministry and the Chinese Embassy agreed to help process and package Kano produce for direct export to China, to seek recognition of Dala Inland Dry Port as a port of origin and destination for China–Kano cargo, to attract Chinese firms from the Lagos and Ogun zones to the Kano Free Trade Zone, and to set up a liaison desk and an arbitration panel for disputes.
  • Kano Free Trade Zone: one of Nigeria’s key zones alongside Lekki FTZ and Lagos Free Zone, regulated by NEPZA. See our free trade zones guide.
  • Rail and water: the Kaduna–Kano standard-gauge railway is being built by Chinese contractors, and PowerChina has worked on dam expansions in Kano and Sokoto.

Northern trade often involves customs clearance and FX settlement, so also read our company registration guide and naira exchange guide.

Getting along locally

Kano is a predominantly Muslim city, and respecting religious custom matters in business: many shops pause around Friday midday prayers, the pace slows during Ramadan (avoid meetings close to the breaking of the fast), and wait to see whether someone of the opposite sex offers a handshake. In 2025 Kano State and the Chinese Embassy agreed to set up a liaison desk and an arbitration panel for disputes between Kano and Chinese companies, so take commercial disputes first to the chamber and the embassy’s commercial office.

Getting there

Kano’s airport is Mallam Aminu Kano International (KAN). Ethiopian lists Kano among its Nigerian destinations, connecting via Addis Ababa to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chengdu; and Qatar Airways ran Doha–Abuja–Kano twice weekly in winter 2025/26. Turkish Airlines serves Kano with cargo only, so passengers on Turkish connect via Abuja or Lagos. Compare options in our China–Nigeria flights guide and check current schedules before booking.

Safety

The UK FCDO (updated 19 October 2026) lists Kano State alongside Kaduna, Kebbi, Jigawa and Sokoto as “all but essential travel”, while neighbouring Katsina and Zamfara are “all travel”. In October 2026 a Chinese worker was killed in an attack on a road construction site in Kebbi State, so project staff in the north-west must follow company security plans strictly. In practice:

  • Travel between cities in daylight, in company, and with security where your employer requires it.
  • Respect local religious customs: dress modestly, avoid eating in public during daytime in Ramadan, and do not drink alcohol in public.
  • Save the national emergency number 112 and the embassy helpline +234 806 337 8795.

See our Nigeria security guide for risk regions and practical steps.

Leisure: mind the Sharia rules

Leisure in Kano means the old city, its markets and local food. Unlike Lagos and Abuja, Kano State has applied Sharia law since 2000, as have 11 other Muslim-majority northern states, and gambling and alcohol are banned. Since October 2024 the Hisbah religious police have been closing sports-betting shops, shutting 30 on the first day and warning that operators who carry on will face a Sharia court, and analysts list Kano as a state where gambling is prohibited. Do not gamble or use betting apps while in Kano. Gambling laws differ sharply from state to state; our Nigeria gambling laws guide (18+) explains the differences.

Cost of living hints

Day-to-day costs are generally lower than in Lagos or Abuja, but security (drivers, guards, secured housing) is often the biggest extra cost for foreigners. We found no reliable Kano rent data, so rely on actual quotes.

First-week checklist for Kano

  1. Papers: employees should enter on an STR visa and obtain a residence permit (CERPAC, now applied for online, with an e-CERPAC issued first) within three months. Short business trips use the e-Visa, which cannot be extended; overstays cost $15 a day and can bring a re-entry ban.
  2. Landing card: complete it online within 72 hours before every arrival and every departure.
  3. SIM card: MTN and Airtel are the main networks. Every SIM must be linked to a National Identification Number (NIN); short-stay visitors can register with a passport.
  4. Health: carry your yellow fever certificate (checked on entry and exit), take malaria prophylaxis as your doctor advises, and prevent bites.
  5. Register: give your personal and company details to the Chinese Embassy in Abuja and join your employer’s or chamber’s security-alert group.
  6. Money: know the gap between the official and parallel rates (about ₦1,333 vs ₦1,357–1,375 per dollar in October 2026) and change money through banks and licensed operators.

Rules change, so check the Nigeria Immigration Service and the Chinese missions for the latest notices.
