Chinese families in Nigeria usually choose one of three routes for their children: an international school in Lagos or Abuja (British, American/IB or French curriculum), Chinese lessons at home or online, or keeping the children at school in China. For adults, Nigeria’s two Confucius Institutes and the growing number of Mandarin classes also create teaching and exchange opportunities.

Key points

  • Lagos has around ten international schools serving expat families, mostly British curriculum (IGCSE/A-Level), plus American/IB, French and Dutch options.
  • The popular British and American schools have waiting lists and high fees, so contact them as soon as your posting is confirmed and negotiate a school allowance.
  • Nigeria has two Confucius Institutes: University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK).
  • Since September 2025, Mandarin has been an optional foreign language in public senior secondary schools.
  • Children need the right visa or residence status before they enrol.

Fees are high and change every year, so we don’t quote them here; ask each school for its current fee schedule. Traffic matters as much as the curriculum. Living close to school saves hours each week, and our guide to Lagos neighbourhoods for expats compares the main areas.

Abuja and other cities

Abuja, as the capital, has diplomatic and international-organisation families and its own international schools, but we have not yet verified the individual schools. Check directly with the school and your HR team. Kano and Port Harcourt have fewer options, and many Chinese staff on project sites or in free zones come on single-status postings while their children stay in China. See our overview of Nigerian cities for how the main cities differ.

Keeping up Chinese

International schools teach in English, and Chinese is at most an elective. Many families combine an international school with online Chinese classes and Chinese textbooks, plus catch-up study during holidays in China. We have not found a reliable source for a weekend Chinese school for Chinese children in Lagos. Ask in the chambers of commerce and community groups listed on our Chinese community in Nigeria page.

Confucius Institutes and Mandarin in Nigeria

Nigeria has two Confucius Institutes, at the University of Lagos and at Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Anambra State. They teach Mandarin and run the Chinese Bridge competition and cultural events. In September 2025 Nigeria added Mandarin as an optional foreign language in public senior secondary schools, alongside French and Arabic, although the press has noted a shortage of qualified teachers. Some public secondary schools in the FCT now have “Chinese Corners”. 2026 marks 55 years of China–Nigeria diplomatic relations, and language and cultural exchanges have picked up. For Chinese residents with a teaching background, that means more demand for Mandarin teachers, interpreters and exchange staff.

Winners of the Nigerian round of Chinese Bridge go on to the global finals in China, and the top 30 worldwide receive full scholarships to study there. Chinese missions issued more than 55,000 visas to Nigerians in 2025, up about 45%, which reflects busy study and business traffic.

Dependant visas and enrolment

A child studying long-term in Nigeria needs lawful residence. Usually the main applicant secures the work visa and residence card first, then applies for dependants. Our STR visa and CERPAC guide explains the steps. Schools typically ask for passports, visa or residence pages, previous school reports and vaccination records; follow each school’s own list. Malaria is a year-round risk, so plan children’s vaccinations and prevention with our malaria and vaccinations guide.

Practical tips for parents

  • Contact two or three schools as soon as your city is confirmed and ask about places, interviews and entrance tests.
  • Get a school allowance written into your employment contract.
  • Choose the school first, then the home, and keep the daily commute reasonable.
  • Keep school records from China in case your child returns to the Chinese system.
  • New arrivals can work through our first-30-days checklist.
